Alex.Rodin

I became familiar with Alex Rodin's artwork while myself and two of my friends stumbled across his work when we went to visit the infamous 'Tacheles' building in Berlin last year in the 'Jewish Quarter'.
Such a hip place, can't say I've been anywhere like it. I feel privileged that I was able to see this amazing area as I believe it is in the process of being shut down; a terrible loss to society, and more so to Berlin's uniqueness and art culture.

When we entered Tacheles, straight away were greeted by a couple of intoxicated boys asking us to join them around, we politely declined and proceeded inside. They were laughing at this blow up doll which apparently was 'mocking' the government which was the reason behind of the closing of this area.

We continued up many flights of stairs, basically in awe of all the crazy graffiti work and busyness of it all. My eyes and head were moving crazily in every direction, to soak up all that was being portrayed. There was murals dominating certain sections, stickers, quotes and random words all over the show. Various colours slapped across old metal railings and crusting walls. Truly is an unbelievable sight to see.

At the very top of the building was Alex Rodin's art space. I completely adore his work, so much so that I even brought two pieces. The silly thing is that I was back-packing around Europe and had about four more weeks of my travels left still. So against my better judgement, I carried them everywhere with me and they made it back to Auckland in one piece, albeit a crinkled piece, but always a treasured piece. Below is one of the two designs I purchased.

Holiday comedown

I haven't written on here for a while, mind you I did go to Vancouver, BC for a month (also had a four day rendezvous with LA) too.

Boy oh boy did I have a fabulous trip to North America! Spent quality time with my Canadian family and did a lot of shopping in LA. Went to Six Flgs amusement park, the zoo and also Zip-Tracked in Whistler. Was funtimes indeed.

Been back in Sydney for nearly 3 weeks now and the holiday comedown is finally beginning to subside. Though, it has been pretty full on the last few weekends. Ive had birthdays, friends visiting from New Zealand and music gigs.

Life is good... Next trip India January 2012. WOW.

Fantastical Mr. Fox

Today, I finally watched Fantastic Mr Fox. I've been meaning to for forever long but something always comes up or I opt for another film instead (waaay to many movies to get through, not enough minutes in the day *sigh). Nonetheless, it never really eventuated.

BUT tonight being the chilly evening that it is, i've wrapped myself in my duvet and decided it was time to check this of my 'must watch' film list!

Boy, am I glad I did, what a lovely film indeed. The characters were cute, likeable and witty and the storyline was impressively capturing for an animation flick. You really could identify Mr. Fox's character as someone you know &/or knew.. He could be your best friend, bastard boss or even your father!

Based on a novel by the great Roald Dahl (I have yet to read the book - though now it is a MUST as books are always much better than the movie adaptation).

The films underlying themes of friendship, insecurity, family and adventure was portrayed in the characters of the 'wild animals'. I felt it was not over done and quite on point, often allowing me to forget that this was animation of animals not humans. It's made me miss children's books, with morals, sense of family orientation and innocence in its pages; slapped with bright colours and adventures. A breath of fresh air from the current thriller and biography's that i've been watching, which can lay heavy on your mind spesh after a hard day's work. It was nice watch a light, refreshing funny, simple film with far-reaching ideas that we should apply in everyday life.  Another gem by Mr Dahl!

Major Markets

Aotea, Avondale, Glebe, Paddington, Newtown, Camden, Portobello... They are all Markets that I have frequented over my years so far. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love a good shop and nothing quite beats the vibes of the inner city 'markets'. The mixed enriched fusions of people, colours, cultures, cuisines, to name a few come together in the weekend to enlighten the greater world of the gems they have to trade.

I completely adore the Glebe Markets in Sydney's Inner West, located in the front yard of Glebe Point Road Primary School. As you walk down Glebe Point Road you can smell the sweet aroma of the amazing roasted macademia nuts and caramelised almonds calling you to their stand located at the entrance gates. You have NO choice but to walk in and have a look. Once inside you are greeted with friendly smiles and a vast array of peoples from all walks of life. Tourists, locals, designers, artists, children, students, buddhists, realists to mention a bunch. Inside, I go searching for little finds that I know I can get on the 'cheap', beautiful vintage pieces and/or one off's that distinguish me from the 'chainstore or shopping mall' crowd. It is the place many young designers start out, get experience and develop street cred before and/or in conjunction with flagship stores and websites. It is a must see Sydney site!!

LAMO

I have recently became engaged with 'Lamography' photography and treated myself to the fine 'Diana Mini F+ (en rose edition)'. My my, what wonderful things, this, little toy camera can dooo.

It uses 35mm films, both colour and black and white. The the truly special thing about it is that it takes you back to the day, in particular for me, my highschool years. No more perfectly manicured and crafted 'DP' pics, GONE are the requests to delete so quickly and no second chances. Just point and shoot and once the film has finished, you take a trip down to your local camera joint and get them developed.
A big HELLO to eagerly awaiting, spontaneity and surprises. It's a lucky dip really - you have no idea what you'll get and how it will turn out. Yes, a majority of them will be average, simple shots that you may or may not have kept if you had a digital cam, but then you will find that one gem that makes it all worthwhile.

I find nowadays we are so use to discarding something that may not appeal straight away, or we will try the same pose tweaking it to make it seemingly 'perfect'. This little baby allows you to take every picture for what it is, a moment in your time. A each moment really should be treasured.

Obviously, with any good thing, practice makes perfect.. Here are a few shots that come about with the 'Diana Mini'.

Homage to the motherland. Intriguing India.

I can't wait to go to India, as I grow older I feel more and more connected and accepting of my culture and hertitage. There is truly no place like it!
A trip is on the cards in January 2012.

A pull comes over me when I see the wonderful things that come out of India.

'Grubby Sunday' --> 'Funday Sunday'

Its a ritual for me that every sunday (well generally after a huge saturday night) that the following day is a complete write of and deemed 'grubby sunday'.
Now as terrible as this sounds a 'grubby sunday' is characterized by the following:
- Hanging in yah jammies the whole day (possible lack of showering). If a shower takes place then getting back into your jammies, therefore equalling you to being 'grubby' again.
- Staying in bed for majority of the day, poping up only for the essentials i.e toilet breaks, snacking and thats about it.
- Sleeping or watching DVDs.
- Eating 'grubby' foods, as in pizza, burgers, butter chicken and pies. Things with very little nutritional value. Well anything to help make the hangover pains subside.

This was me for three quarters of the day yesterday.

Saturday, for me was a messy league/pub/beer infused day doubled with lack of lunch = drunkard Sammie. Therefore Sunday was in bed doing the complete above ^

But.... Here's how my 'grubby sunday' turned into a 'funday sunday'.. At 3.30 I decided to get up and at least shower as I had THE worst headache ever. I left my room and saw my flatmate Anthony who invited me to a film festival and to see Mark Ronson do a DJ set in Surrey Hills. I HAD TO GO!
I needed to snap out of my lethargic, I'm so death right now and fuck the world and everyone who's in it attitude and had to perk up!

Sooo.. I went across the road to get the most delish banana smoothie at my local gelato shop! Best thing ever and it did the trick. When I came home the flatties were vacuuming their rooms and because our house vacuum broke I was in line to give my room a quick do-over. Instantly, the house and my room were 100 times more cleaner and in turn changed my mood. I was ready for the afternoon!

I met Anthony's 'potential' girlfriend, who was a straight delight and soo cute. Her sister also came with us and with that we hopped in a cab and headed to Prince Albert Park where we met Nick and his girl Rachel. We had a quick nosey and decided to head to Fatima's for dinner. This was great news to me as I still have not tried it and I have heard great things about this Lebanese food joint. I ordered the eggplant and potato and it was very tasty, drank some more wine (meh, decided I may as well - they say the best way to rid a hangover is to have another drink!!)

9.00pm = MARK RONSON... and it was grand and crazy fun, spesh because it was FREEEEE!
He dropped my favey jam (video) and paid homage to Nate Dogg by spinning Ooo wee. He also did Simon Says which went off as well as some Jigga man and Aretha Franklins R.E.S.P.E.C.T... and we partied until he finished his set. Good times.

&&&.. That was just a little slice of my life tale explaining how my 'grub sundy' turned out to be pretty damn productive! FUNDAY
